Is Plastic the Enemy?

Plastic bags outperform paper bags environmentally – on manufacturing, on reuse, and on solid waste volume and generation.

  • Not only do paper bags have a much higher global warming potential, but they also have a heavier environmental impact that the manufacturing of plastic bags*. An estimated 14 billion trees are cut down annually for paper packaging, whereas plastic ones are by-products of oil refining.

  • According to a research paper produced by the Northern Ireland Assembly, it takes more than four times the energy to manufacture paper bags than it does plastic, also producing a higher concentration of toxic chemicals compared with making single-use plastic bags**. Paper production emits air pollution, specifically 70-80 percent more pollution than the production of plastic bags*** .

  • Paper bags also weigh more than plastic; this means transportation requires more energy, adding to their carbon footprint.
